The transfer policy implemented at Manchester United this summer may have come under intense scrutiny, but it appears as though the Red Devils have snapped up a starlet.

Edinson Cavani, who finally got off the mark at Everton on Saturday, arrived to huge fanfare amid reports of mammoth wages, but the signing of Charlie McNeill went under the radar.

The striker returned to Carrington in the summer from bitter rivals Manchester City, despite having originally progressed through United’s academy.

McNeill scored twice on his debut for the Under-18’s in their 4-0 victory over Derby County last month.

The Manchester Evening News claim United sources have described the 17-year-old as ‘ridiculously good’ in training sessions and he is said to have impressed the coaches.

McNeill, an England youth international, signed for a reported fee of £750,000 which could rise to £1.5m after he rejected an offer from City to stay.

Spanish trio Marc Jurado, Alvaro Fernandez and Alejandro Garnacho were all also confirmed to have joined the club over the summer.

In a statement, United revealed: “Manchester United can confirm the signing of two new additions at Under-18s level. Garnacho, 16, mainly featured in Atletico Madrid’s Juvenil B side last season but also appeared for their Under-19s team.

“The Spaniard, who can operate up front as well as on both wings, has completed a period of self-isolation after arriving from the Spanish capital and can now begin training with his new team-mates.

“McNeill is a 17-year-old striker who has represented England up to Under-16s level and was a prolific goalscorer during his time in Manchester City’s younger age-groups.”
