WWE is a weird and wonderful place at the best of times, but 2020 was a year that forced them to think outside the box even more so than usual.

Below, talkSPORT looks at five of the craziest things WWE has put on TV this year. If you needed reminding that wrestling isn’t real, here you go!

Rey Mysterio’s eye popped out

The legendary luchador was embroiled in a feud with Seth Rollins for the vast majority of the year and the crux of this rivalry saw Rollins, the Monday Night Messiah at that point, try and take Mysterio’s eye.

This led to an ‘eye-for-an-eye’ match at Extreme Rules this year and when Rollins dug Mysterio’s eyes into the steel steps – at the climax of a fantastic wrestling match – Mysterio’s eye appeared to pop out.

WWE seemed to give Mysterio a fake eye to hold in this instance and with a little bit of blood sprinkled on, it was barely passable.

Bray Wyatt burned alive

Tables, Ladders and Chairs was WWE’s final pay-per-view of the year in 2020 and they decided to go out with a bang. Or a flame.

Many of you will recall Randy Orton set fire to Bray Wyatt’s house back in 2017 as their feud ramped up on the way to WrestleMania 33. Hallmarks of that story were revisited this week as Orton attempted to set The Fiend on fire inside a box on RAW.

This led to a Firefly Funhouse Inferno match at TLC and The Fiend would lose that battle. He even took an RKO while on fire! But, that wasn’t enough and Orton had to go and douse gasoline all over The Fiend before setting him ablaze and burning him to a crisp. Essentially, it was murder!

Rey Mysterio and Aleister Black thrown from the roof of WWE HQ

Believe it or not, Mysterio’s luck wasn’t much better when he had two working eyes. The Money in the Bank ladder match was one of the first cinematic matches WWE attempted outside of WrestleMainia and it got mixed reviews compared to the glorious Boneyard match, especially.

As the match got down to the final climax – which took place on the roof of Titan Towers – Rey Mysterio and Aleister Black were flung from the skyscraper thanks to Baron Corbin.

While we were left to imagine they had plummeted to their deaths, it was revealed on the following episodes of RAW that they had landed on a lower roof and the drop was perhaps 10 feet, not 70. All was well.

Braun Strowman drowned

After Braun Strowman won the Universal title from Goldberg at WrestleMania 36, he had a brief feud with John Morrison and The Miz before moving on to old friend, Bray Wyatt.

Strowman would defeat Wyatt first off, then he would take on the old version of Wyatt – the cult leader – at Extreme Rules.

To get to the final battle with The Fiend, Strowman had to bring that out of Wyatt and it seems as though battling in American swamps will do just that! After Strowman thought he had drowned Wyatt, The Fiend emerged and dragged the champion under. The Fiend would emerge from the water alone to end the show suggesting Strowman was done for.

Street Profits & Viking Raiders cinematic match featuring a garbage monster

We’ve said garbage monster in the title because we really don’t know how to describe it.

After fending off ninjas and breaking through glass panels during their tag team battle that followed weeks of head-to-head battles in various sports, the duos ended up in a rubbish skip.

Surrounded by black bin bags, all of a sudden tentacles from an unknown monster began to emerge causing both teams to flee for their very lives! Lord knows what that creature was and it has never been revisited, or even explained why, but it absolutely happened. On closer inspection, it seems like it might have been an alligator, but why it was in the trash is still a mystery.

Now don’t you tell us wrestling isn’t real!
