Justin Gaethje has fired a statement of intent to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s ‘toxic’ fans, insisting they will ‘cry literal tears’ after the main event at UFC 254 – which will be live on talkSPORT 2 this Saturday night.
Lightweight champion Khabib, who has a 28-0 record, is the overwhelming favourite for the Abu Dhabi bout, but Gaethje is not short of confidence.
The American stepped in for Khabib at UFC 249 in May after the Russian was forced to pull out of his fight with Tony Ferguson due to coronavirus restrictions.
Gaethje’s surprise victory set up a title shot at Khabib, and now he is relishing the chance to usurp the MMA king.
“Outside Conor McGregor, Khabib has the most toxic fans in the sport,” Gaethje said.
“They’re absolutely ridiculous and I love how emotional they are.
“When I knock him out, I know they’re going to cry literal tears.
“They think he’s the toughest man on the planet, but tears will fall from their eyes when he goes to sleep.”
Gaethje, the 22-2 fighter, has won his last four bouts, but Khabib has beaten every challenger in sight, including McGregor.
That doesn’t phase Gaethje, though. He added: “I love being the underdog, I love people telling me it’s impossible.
“A legacy is created when you do the impossible and that’s what I’m here for.”
