Liverpool’s injury crisis in defence has got a whole lot worse with Joe Gomez joining the treatment table while on England duty.

The type or extent of Gomez’s injury hasn’t been revealed, however, it’s understood that the centre-back’s knock is serious.

It’s bad news for England ahead of their friendly against the Republic of Ireland and Nations League double header against Belgium and Iceland – but Gomez’s club are in defensive dire straits.

Gomez’s centre-back partner Virgil van Dijk is a long-term absentee, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to be out for four weeks with a calf strain. Meanwhile, the return date of stand-in defender Fabinho isn’t clear.

Joel Matip is the only senior star with experience at centre-halve on Liverpool’s books who is likely to be fit to play following the international break.

If Gomez is a long-term absentee, it means Jurgen Klopp could be forced to look into the transfer market in January as Liverpool bid to defend their Premier League crown.

Could 34-year-old defender Ezequiel Garay come to Liverpool’s rescue?

Could 34-year-old defender Ezequiel Garay come to Liverpool’s rescue?

But Reds fan Tony told talkSPORT there’s one ‘class’ centre-back Liverpool can sign tomorrow if they want to – Ezequiel Garay.

Garay boasts an impressive CV, having played for the likes of Real Madrid and Benfica, while also representing Argentina at the 2014 World Cup, where they reached the final.

He’s available to sign immediately as his contract with Valencia ended earlier this year following a cruciate ligament injury he sustained.

Despite that and the fact Garay is 34 years old, Tony believes he is the player Liverpool need right now.

Tony said on Wednesday’s Drive: “He’s out of contract so Liverpool can sign him right now.

“He’s fully fit again after the knee injury he picked up at Valencia. He’s a class centre-half so we could get him on a short-term deal.

“In terms of Champions League, someone like Ezequiel Garay, on a short-term basis, he might just have jumped to the top of the list for Klopp.”

However, Garay to Liverpool was met with some scepticism by Drive co-host for the day, Troy Deeney.

Deeney said: “The short-term buy would help but when everyone’s back, would Garay fit in? There’s so many things that Liverpool would have to look at.”
