Leon Edwards accuses Jorge Masvidal of ducking him to face Nate Diaz next

Leon Edwards has accused Jorge Masvidal of rejecting the chance to fight him as he would rather a rematch with Nate Diaz.

The welterweights have bad blood which goes back to UFC London in 2019 when Masvidal gave the Birmingham fighter a ‘three piece and a soda’ backstage at the 02 Arena.

Since then, ‘Rocky’ has continued to amass victory after victory and was supposed to fight Tyron Woodley to determine a number one contender for Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title.

But when Gilbert Burns dropped out of the reckoning for his title fight at UFC 251, Masvidal stepped up on short notice to take the fight and came up short – although he left with his reputation furthered.

Following the loss on Fight Island, it is rumoured the Miami-native will instead focus on a rematch with Nate Diaz after their epic bout at UFC 244 for the BMF title was (literally) cut short.

And Edwards, who was born in Jamaica, is somewhat exasperated at the predicament.

“I want the fight,” Edwards told MMA Fighting about the proposed meeting with Masvidal. “The UFC wanted the fight.

“They offered it to him and he turned it down. He said he’d rather fight Nate Diaz.

“I don’t understand it. He claims he wants to get back to the title shot and fight for a world championship. I don’t understand what fighting a person like Nate Diaz will get you?

“I don’t know, I don’t know where his head’s at. I don’t know what the f*** he’s doing but I’m here, I’m ready. I’m willing to go.”

Colby Covington returned to the win column against Woodley with a dominant performance at the UFC Apex and forced a stoppage out of the ‘Chosen One’ in Las Vegas.

But Edwards has admitted he would gladly welcome the fight against ‘Chaos’ for his racist remarks after the bout.

“Your tribe and smoke signals and blah, blah, blah, and he’s calling Woodley a terrorist because of Black Lives Matter,” Edwards said.

“All these statements he’s making is racist. There’s no other way to go around it.

Israel Adesanya addresses Colby Covington’s comments over the weekend and feels that there is hypocrisy in how he is covered by the media

“I understand he’s creating a character, but race that’s not a character. That’s just hate and he’s spreading hate. I never liked the guy and after that, I 100% don’t like the guy.”

“Every fight he does the same thing,” Edwards added. “He falls into his shots.

“If he didn’t have cardio he’d be a s*** fighter. If he didn’t have his pace because everything he does is pretty standard, pretty straight forward with what he does and when he competes.

“That would be a great matchup for me as well. Anyone in the top five, I believe I’ll be victorious. I’ll f*** him up. I’m ready to go. It’s up to him and the UFC.”
