Khabib Nurmagomedov was simply not going to be denied one final victory in the octagon against Justin Gaethje at UFC 254.

‘The Eagle’ called time on his distinguished career after the 29th win of his illustrious MMA career on Fight Island to retain his UFC lightweight title.

As he put his gloves down on the canvas in Abu Dhabi, the emotions got the better of the normally stoic Russian and the tragedies he had to overcome in order to make it to the octagon became apparent.

As well as losing his father, Abdulmanap, to the COVID-19 outbreak, Nurmagomedov was also hospitalised with mumps and broke several bones in his foot.

Although he did not admit this himself before the bout, AKA head coach Javier Mendez admitted his star pupil had suffered the fractures immediately after being released from hospital and missed valuable sparring time.

Khabib wore strapping around two of the toes on his left foot, although he did little to show he was in fact struggling with injury.

That is, however, until he locked in the triangle choke which eventually put Gaethje to sleep.

Former UFC middleweight contender turned pundit Dan Hardy reviewed the bout on his Full Reptile YouTube channel and duly noted Khabib grimacing in pain.

The 155lbs champion inadvertently caught his foot on the cage and duly twisted it at a completely awkward angle and clearly caused serious pain.

However, just like his late father wanted, Khabib showed all the true qualities of a champion and powered on through to secure the finish and retain his title for one final time.
