Former England international Danny Mills believes people are getting carried away by Jack Grealish’s form, telling supporters to ‘calm down with the hype’.
The Aston Villa captain was a standout performer in England’s 2-0 defeat by Belgium in the Nations League on Sunday.
In addition to his impressive competitive Three Lions full debut, Grealish has scored four goals and registered five assists in seven Premier League matches this season.
But former Leeds and England defender Mills wants fans to ‘calm down’ over the 25-year-old.
He told Tuesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast: “It was put out there that he’s one of the best midfield players in the world again.
“Yes, he played well, he’s a fantastic player, he’s superb, he’s got an awful lot of talent. But let’s just calm down with the hype a little bit.
“This is not Lionel Messi we’re talking about, this is not Cristiano Ronaldo that is scoring untold amount of goals. He played well, that’s absolutely fine.
“How many times have we done this for England? Once upon a time, everyone’s hopes were on Gazza [Paul Gascoigne]. Then Jack Wilshere came along, ‘oh we’ve got to put all our eggs in that basket and we’ve got to build the team around him’… or it was Wayne Rooney before that.
“Players have moments where they have a couple fantastic seasons of great form. You can’t build your team around one player.”
Mills claims Grealish is nowhere near the level of former England players Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes.
He added: “When you’re talking about world class players, I keep hearing, ‘Jack Grealish is a world class player’. Not yet he’s not.
“Maybe he’s got potential, what is he now, 25? He’s got a couple of years to prove that to get anywhere near that bracket.

“Look at what they achieved, look at what they won; Luka Modric when he was at Tottenham and then went on [to Real Madrid], they’re world class players.
“We see two or three good performances and everybody just piles in and gets carried away by it; ‘oh wow, this is amazing’. Sometimes we have to have a little bit of a reality check.”
