Lewis Hamilton won the 2020 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award on Sunday.
The Brit was recognised for his stunning year in motorsport as he won a seventh Formula 1 World Championship – equalling legendary driver Michael Schumacher’s record – last month.
It was the second time Hamilton has been voted for the SPOTY prize having picked up the award in 2014.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson finished second, while jockey Hollie Doyle came third.
Accepting the award via video link, Hamilton said: “Firstly, I wanted to say congratulations to the incredible nominees because I’m so proud of what they’ve achieved this year.
“I really want to say thank you to everyone that’s called in and voted for me. I really wasn’t expecting this knowing there were so many great contenders, but I think we’re all winners.
“I want to send a Merry Christmas to everyone. I know it’s been such an unusual year, but all the frontline workers, all the children around the world, please try and stay positive throughout this difficult time.
“I’m sending everyone positivity and again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Runner-up Henderson captained Liverpool to their first league title in 30 years and they will be top of the Premier League table on Christmas Day.
The midfielder was also widely praised for his role in the #PlayersTogether campaign, which raised funds for NHS charities during the coronavirus pandemic.
Doyle broke her own record for the most winners in a calendar year by a female jockey before enjoying a Champions Day double at Ascot – including her first Group One aboard Glen Shiel in the British Champions Sprint.
