Forest Green’s stadium is set to be renamed ‘Kevin’ after masses of fans voted in a poll on social media.
The League Two side, who became the world’s first vegan club in 2015, have recently acquired Innocent as a sponsor and want to rename The New Lawn Stadium with the smoothie-making company in the title.
But having asked fans to suggest titles online, the vote went overwhelmingly in favour of ‘Kevin’ – with a whopping 65 per cent going for it.
Innocent’s UK marketing director, Anna Bateson, as quoted by The Sun, said: “We have no idea who Kevin is.”
Soccer Saturday’s Jeff Stelling also expressed his delight at the news the stadium could potentially be called Kevin, writing on social media: “If it is Kevin it is guaranteed a mention every week!!’
The vote has striking similarities to the 2016 farce involving Boaty McBoatFace, where 124,000 people voted for that name to be given to a British research ship.
Unfortunately, the vote was vetoed and RRS Sir David Attenborough was chosen as the title instead.
Last month, Hector Bellerin became the second largest shareholder in Forest Green, known as the ‘world’s greenest football club’.
Bellerin – a vegan who is passionate about environmental issues – said he wants to support their ambitions and ideals, which align with his own.
“Dale has revolutionised that football club — they’re vegan, they’re eco-friendly, they have a neutral carbon footprint,” he said.
“They’re a clear example of how to run a football club in our times so I wanted to be a part of it and offer my help to them in whichever way I could.”
