Bruno Fernandes scored twice to help ease the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United recorded a 3-1 win over Everton on Saturday afternoon.

The Portugal international has been the standout performer for the club since his arrival in January and he proved his worth again at Goodison Park with two goals in seven first-half minutes as the visitors had to come from behind yet again.

Victory avoided the ignominy of United’s worst start to a league season since 1989-90 and was a welcome boost after defeats to Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir in the last seven days as Fernandes made it 13 goals in 21 Premier League matches.

Defeat at Goodison Park could well have been the final straw for Solskjaer, who has come under intense scrutiny for United’s inconsistent form at home and in Europe.

Yet Trevor Sinclair, who watched the game as part of talkSPORT’s exclusive commentary team, believes the second half performance from United proves the players want to play for the Norwegian.

He said on GameDay: “They’ve managed this last period superbly well Manchester United by putting the ball into the right areas.

“Apart from Bruno Fernandes’ speculative shot from about 40 yards, they’ve really looked in control of this second period whether they are in possession or out of it.

“They’ve defended that final third really well and there is an advert that is needed for Ole that his players are with him and want to fight for him – this is it.

“They’ve been superb to a man today.”

United have made a better start to this season than the previous campaign, which saw them finish in third place and qualify for the Champions League.

Yet Solskjaer has consistently drawn criticism from sections of the media, former professionals and pundits alike who believe the magnitude of the task is too large at Old Trafford.

But Sinclair believes finding a level of consistency could take this United team to another level.

“I think that is the main word – inconsistent,” he added. “You look at some of the results recently; especially the RB Leipzig performance and the PSG win

“And you think, ‘Wow Manchester United are flying’. But in the league and, especially at home where they’ve not managed a win this season in the Premier League, they’ve really struggled.

“I think the Arsenal performance was just a bit off it; they weren’t 100 per cent, they didn’t really look like they were committed or that they had the desire to win the game.

“So that would have disappointed the manager. But, at times, they’ve been great as well and if they can try and get that consistency… For me, I don’t want to say arrogance in a bad way, I think it is over self-belief.

“When they have had a couple of good results, they got into the next game and they kind of forget the fundamentals where you have got to fight, you’ve got to win that individual battle and then you earn the right to play.

“And I think, because there is a lot of young players in that side, they have got to learn to do that week in, week out.”
