The US has the highest number of coronavirus cases and related deaths in the world. The Director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases told the BBC’s Newsnight that dinners and gatherings across the festive period must be kept to as few people as possible.

Dr Fauci said: “My advice is going to sadden people because everyone wants the family-warmth and get together that is so charismatic of the Christmas season.

“My recommendation would be to curtail travelling as much as you possibly can.

“Even though it is such an important part of Christmas, keep the gatherings and dinners to as few people as possible.

“I know that is so difficult to accept because people already have Covid fatigue, they are just tired of not leading a normal life.

“Then you are telling them on the Christmas holidays to the best of your ability ‘don’t do that’.

“I know that is tough but I believe it is the only way we are going to prevent an even greater surge than we are already seeing.”

He was then asked: “It is a cancel Christmas message in effect?”

Dr Fauci replied: “Yes, in some respects it is, unfortunately.”

“We’ve currently identified over 1000 cases with this variant, predominantly in the south of England.

“Although cases have been identified in nearly 60 different local authority areas.”

“Similar variants have been identified in other countries over the last few months.

“We’ve notified the World Health Organisation about this new variant.”
