China news: Donald Trump re-election ‘could suit Beijing’ | World | News

A Democratic presidency may restore a more predictable form of American diplomacy, but Chinese trade negotiator Long Yongtu reportedly told a Shenzhen conference late last year, “we want Trump to be re-elected; we would be glad to see that happen”. Mr Long is understood to have suggested President Trump’s tweets make him “easy to read” and that he was “the best choice in an opponent for negotiations”. Chinese state-run news platform The Global Times editor Hu Xijin shared this view and recently tweeted: “Trump, we wish for your re-election because you can make America eccentric and thus hateful for the world. You help promote unity in China.”

The opinion even among hard-line CCP officials is that the chaotic Trump administration is “undermining the entire Western democratic system” and making authoritarian China look like a “sea of stability”, BBC correspondent Stephen McDonell claimed.

BBC China correspondent Stephen McDonell tweeted: “Many in the Communist Party leadership think Trump is great for China.

“Whether right or wrong they feel that he is undermining the entire western project and that the chaos of the USA under Donald Trump makes China look like a sea of stability.”

However, it is not known with certainty which candidate China’s politburo would prefer in the upcoming 2020 election.

“On the other hand, Trump has been disastrous for US soft power and credibility and has undermined some US alliances.

“And the Democrats have been tougher on human rights.

“So, in some ways, four more years of Trump could suit China.”

Despite this, Donald Trump has previously warned about the Chinese wanting Joe Biden to be successful in the 2020 US election.

He tweeted: “The Chinese are desperate to have Sleepy Joe Biden win the presidential race so they can continue to rip-off the United States, as they have done for decades until I came along!”
