Ademola Lookman Panenka penalty fail should see him fined, says Andy Cole and Fulham man accused of making situation ‘all about him’

Two things can happen by attempting a Panenka penalty: You score and look cool, or you miss and have egg on your face.

Ademola Lookman tried it at West Ham on Saturday night and unfortunately for him, the Fulham man spectacularly ended up in the latter category.

The forward made a complete hash of his spot-kick – in the eighth minute of stoppage time – as his effort dribbled into the hands of Lukasz Fabianski.

To make matters a whole lot worse for Lookman, his miss came in the final minute of stoppage-time with Fulham going onto lose the London Stadium clash 1-0.

Lookman has since apologised to fans, posting on social media on Sunday: “After yesterday’s mistake, I take full responsibility and onus for it.

“To my teammates, manager and the supporters I vow to put the next one in. I will not let one failure hold me back. ⁦@FulhamFC”

It doesn’t take a genius to work out Lookman’s effort was poorly executed but talkSPORT’s Danny Mills believes it throws up some issues about the attitude of players these days, who would prefer to make it ‘all about them’ rather than do something for the good of the team.

On Lookman’s miss, the former England defender: “Is this not the curse of the modern day player?

“You’ve got a free kick from twelve yards out, you against the goalkeeper. The aim is to put the ball in the back of the net – it’s a free shot, it’s unopposed.

“It’s almost as if you’re making it all about you – I want to be the guy who does something special, I want to be the guy who wants to be on social media, I want to be on the TV channels.

Carlton Cole says Frank Lampard and Scott Parker showed the characteristics of managers even during their playing days

“You know what, just do what Alan Shearer used to do. Walk up and smash it in the corner in the last minute and put your hand in the air and say ‘I’ve got my team a point’.

“It was all about him in that situation and he’s going to get his comeuppance.”

Former Arsenal player Perry Groves also gave his opinion on the failed penalty during the Sunday Session on talkSPORT – saying he would ban his players from attempting Panenkas if he was a manager.

“The Panenka plonker of the weekend,” began Groves. “When you look at him you think, ‘you’ve got too high an opinion of yourself’. He’s trying to be too clever.

“Just don’t be too clever and don’t try to over complicate it.

“If you are going to be clever you HAVE to score.

“If I was a manager I would BAN players from doing Panenkas, because goalkeepers aren’t’ moving as quickly.”

While co-host Andy Cole, the Manchester United legend, said banning players from taking Panenkas may be going too far, he did have his own opinion.

“I wouldn’t ban them, I would fine them if they missed it,” he admitted. “Fine them a couple of weeks’ wages.”
